Based on the typology of nine theoretical ethical climates, I circulated a questionnaire at ABC Bank in Bandung to detect a potential problem in ethical climate. Compared to the study that was conducted in the United States in the field of banking sector, the result in my current study showed a lower score on social responsibility climate than should have been expected. Highlighting ethical decision making based on concerns of the external stakeholders (i.e. the customers, the public, and the community at large), I decided to focus on exploring corporate social responsibility (CSR) conducted by ABC Bank as a business issue. By utilising the framework of implicit and explicit CSR to explore the extent of whether the employees were aware of CSR programs executed by the company, as well as by using their archives, questionnaires and interviews for further analysis; I learned that some CSR programs were not completely exposed to certain employees that might be the probable cause of lower social responsibility climate. Given the fact that ethical climate emphasising people in the company who are making decisions based on concerns of the external stakeholders, (including the community); not knowing and not being involved in a particular CSR program suggest a probable case indicating how thorough such as social responsibility concerns were or are being addressed or handled in discourses that create(d) the climate. Based on the methods being used, I concluded that the issue happened due to limited communication and counselling. In an attempt to help improving ABC Bank Bandung’s social responsibility climate, I recommend that they would consider using a bulletin board to announce their past and future (external) CSR programs, to discuss CSR projects in details during meetings, to give employees counselling, and to ask their voluntary participation on upcoming CSR events. text |
