Characteristic of Neutral Red Adsorption on Fly Ash, Calcium Alginate, and Calcium Alginate Encapsulated Fly Ash
Fly ash (FA) is a byproduct of coal generated power plant. Neutral Red (NR) is a toxic cationic dye that may harm aquatic environment. In this research adsorption of NR using FA, calcium alginate (CA), and FA capsulated with CA (CAFA) has been studied. Those adsorbent was characterized using FTIR, X...

Conditions of maximum adsorption of NR on CA, FA, and CAFA were optimized by studying the effects of pH, initial NR concentration, initial adsorbent mass, and contact time. Percent adsorption increased as the increasing of pH in solution and reach optimum pH at pH 6. Optimum initial concentration for CA, FA, and CAFA sequently are 1000 ppm, 1250 ppm, and 500 ppm. Adsorption capacity of CA, FA, and CAFA sequently are 152.77 mg/g, 229.29 mg/g, and 94.58 mg/g. Optimum initial adsorbent mass for CA and FA is 0.1 gram, while CAFA is 0.125 gram. Optimum contact time for CA and CAFA is 2 hours while for FA is 1 hour. Adsorption of CA and FA follow Langmuir isotherm adsorption model while FA follows Freundlich isotherm model. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption process of CA, FA, and CAFA obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Adsorbent CA, FA, and CAFA can reused for NR adsorption after desorbed by HCl 0.5 M. text |
