Determination of Sun Protection Factor of Sunscreen Lotion Containing an Active Ingredient of Photosynthetic Pigments of Navicula sp.
Human skin may be harmed by the exposure of high intensity ultraviolet ray. This can be prevented by the use of sunscreen containing microalgal photosynthetic pigments as an active ingredient. This study aimed to determine the value of sun protection factor (SPF) of a sunscreen lotion containing the...

This can be prevented by the use of sunscreen containing microalgal photosynthetic pigments as an active ingredient. This study aimed to determine the value of sun protection factor (SPF) of a sunscreen lotion containing the active ingredient of photosynthetic pigments obtained from Navicula sp. The methodology included cultivation of Navicula sp. in modified seawater; extraction of photosynthetic pigments from dry biomass of Navicula sp.; determination of irritation and SPF values of sunscreen lotion containing photosynthetic pigments of Navicula sp. in vivo on under surface of albino rabbit?s skin. The result showed that the microalgae specimen used was a single culture of Navicula sp. Wet Navicula sp. biomass contained 88.5±0.4% of water. The Navicula sp. productivity was 0.104±0.004 g biomass/L culture/day. The crude extract of photosynthetic pigments of Navicula sp. contained of ?- carotene, pheophytin a, chlorophyll a, diatoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, and fucoxanthin. The sunscreen lotion containing photosynthetic pigments of Navicula sp. had no effects on rabbit skin irritation, and SPF value of the lotion was 1.7. These indicated that photosynthetic pigments of Navicula sp. showed a sunscreen activity. text |
