Summary: | Morus macroura Miq. or locally known as andalas is one of the species belongs to Moraceae family. In Indonesia, this plant grows in Sumatera and West Java. The timber of this plant is utilized for building materials while the leaves and twigs are utilized for feeding silkworm. Phytochemical study showed that andalas contains secondary metabolites mostly phenolic compounds such as benzoic acid derivatives, phenylpropanoids, stilbenoids, 2-arylbenzofurans, flavonoids and Diels-Alder adducts. Some of these phenolic compounds have been reported to have physiological activity such as antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antityrosinase. Chemical diversity exploration of andalas can be done to evaluate the chemical profile of this plant. Therefore, the objective of this investigation is isolation and characterization of secondary metabolites from root bark of Morus macroura Miq. Isolation of secondary metabolites is conducted by extraction of ± 2 kg dry powdered sample of Morus macroura root trunk using methanol for 24 hours, repeated four times. Macerates are then collected and evaporated, yielding 85 g of methanol extract. Twenty gram of the methanol extract is fractionated by vacuum-liquid chromatography and the fractions obtained are further purified by radial chromatography afforded three compounds. Structure elucidation is done by analyzing 1- dimensional (1H and 13C NMR) and 2-dimensional (HMBC and HSQC) NMR spectra of secondary metabolites which are successfully purified. From methanol extract of Morus macroura Miq., three phenolic compounds have been successfully isolated and characterized. The three phenolic compounds are oxyresveratrol, 2,4,3’- trihydroxydihydrostilbene, and ?-resorcylaldehyde. |
