Description
Summary:The p-hydroxyacetophenone (p-HAP) and p-hydroxypropiophenone (p-HPP) are derivative of aromatic compounds and used as precursor for the manufacture of paracetamol drug. Conventionally, these compounds can be synthesized by two- step reactions of Friedel-Crafts acylation and Fries rearrangement using a catalyst from the metal halide (AlCl3). However, the use of this homogeneous catalyst is considered uneconomical and causing an environmental problems because it requires an additional process for the separation of the catalyst. Moreover, waste product is corrosive and toxic to the environment. The use of crystalline microporous material such as zeolite as a catalyst is offered as solution because of it is nature as a heterogeneous catalyst responsible for easy separation. In this research, we reported the succcesful synthesis of p-HAP and p-HPP by one-step reaction following propionilation and acylation of phenol catalyzed by zeolite H- ZSM-5 in liquid phase. The resulting products were analyzed using NMR and Mass spectroscopy, and GC-MS. Selectivity to para product (para/ortho ratio) was obtained to be 100%. The formation of aromatic ester compounds, i.e. phenyl propionate and phenyl acetate was resulted as by-products.
