Effect of Coal Acid Leaching as Coal Pretreatment Method on Cogasification of Coal and Biomass

Coal and biomass are great potential fuel sources for energy production in the future. Indonesian coal is dominated by low rank types, lignite, which is less desirable to be processed. Biomass that is very abundant in Indonesia is empty palm fruit bunches (EPFB), waste from oil palm industry that...

Indonesian coal is dominated by low rank types, lignite, which is less desirable to be processed. Biomass that is very abundant in Indonesia is empty palm fruit bunches (EPFB), waste from oil palm industry that has not been utilized optimally. Cogasification of lignite and EPFB is present as a production of energy sources that aim to get a synergistic effect. However, not all cogasification results better quality from fuel parent gasification product (high H2 yiled). Alkali and alkaline earth metals in biomass gives synergistic effect on cogasification product while silica and alumina in coal inhibits catalytic effect of it. Both elements can be minimized through the demineralization process using acid leaching. The purpose of this study are to determine the effect of coal demineralization and feed mixing ratio on lignite coal and palm empty fruit bunches cogasification. In this study, demineralization acted as lignite pre-treatment was achieved through HF leaching at 70 text
