Summary:Gear is one of the most important machine component which is used in industrial machinery. Any fault in gear can affect other components such as shaft, bearing, or it can result break down on machinery. Break down on machinery can result high economic loses because break down can stopping some proceses in a factory such as production proces. Therefore, it is very important to detect and to understand early fault symptoms from a gear especially through the vibration signal. Sideband is one of the gear vibration spectrum that inform about failure in gears. Sideband indicate that the gear meshing contact has been modulated by some defects. This research will be analyzed about sideband emerge mechanism phisically and analyzed about sideband emerge factors. This research was done through two measurement that are gear quality geometric measurement and spur gear vibration signal measurement. Simulation is also done in this research to understand the characteristic of sideband on vibration signal. Simulation result then compare to the vibration measurement signal to get the sideband sources. This research reveal that sideband on spur gear vibration signal occured due to modulation by eccentricity and tooth spacing error on gear. Eccentricity will produce amplitude modulation and tooth spacing error will produce frequency modulation. Modulation that occured in the vibration of spur gear experiment object is combine modulation between amplitude modulation and frequency modulation.
