Gated Communities are residential areas surrounded and restricted by gates, barriers/portals that have controlled and limited access. Gated communities are not only for new settlements built with gates and walls but also old neighborhoods that have been closed as a consequence of increasing urban insecurity. Some studies have argued that gated communities have a positive impact on spatial activities such as encouraging better facilities and infrastructure. Nevertheless, the majority reveals that gated communities cause sprawl and fragmentation of cities. Gated communities that develop in the Mamminasata Area are developing quite rapidly, especially in the suburbs. To minimize that spatial impact caused by gated communities, it is necessary to identify how far the spatial impact affects the Mamminasata Area. This study uses descriptive explanations and pseudo evaluation as an approach. Gated Communities that identified in the Mamminasata Area are 392. The results show that spatial impacts include the tendency of gated communities to be spread sprawl and irregular. In addition, land use changes are quite significant and some communities are not homogeneous with land use around because it is located on agricultural land. Spatial fragmentation occurs on the field because the majority of communities are surrounded by gated/walls and have controlled access. On the other hand, the prohibition of using public facilities in gated communities do not occur. Some communities do not cause a better quality environment than before and the majority of road connectivity in the gated communities are closed because of implementing one gated system. text |
