Summary: | Methylene blue is a cationic dye that is widely used for the process of coloring cloth. cotton, and tannins. Methylene blue is irritant. mutagenic.and carcinogenic in humans. Adsorption is the one of effective method, simple, and lov. cost to remove methylene blue in v.astev.ater. In this study. calcium alginate was synthesized from a mixture of sodium alginate and CaC03 with hydrochloric acid solution. as a methylene blue adsorbent. Adsorbent has been synthesized were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. The optimum conditions for adsorption were studied in various conditions. namely pH, contact time, adsorbent mass, and initial concentration of methylene blue. Optimum adsorption was obtained at pH 4, contact time for 60 minutes. mass of adsorbent was 0.025 grams, and initial concentration of methylene blue is 500 ppm. The process of methylene blue adsorption by calcium alginate followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm model v.ith ma-ximum capacity of adsorption is 250 mg g•1 • Kinetics study of methylene blue adsorption followed pseudo second order reaction kinetics models. Adsorbent has been used in the methylene blue adsorption-desorption cycle of three cycles.
