Glucose Oxidation to Formic Acid
Formic acid is a substance that has many advantages, hydrogen can be kept in liquid form of formic acid. The decomposition of formic acid that resulting hydrogen and carbon dioxide can be done by using silver as catalyst. Indonesia is rich for its renewable feedstock, one of them is glucose. Formic...

Formic acid can be produced by oxidation process of glucose with the assist of compound metal catalysts. The purpose of this research is to find the best reaction conditions that obtain the highest yield of formic acid. The option of catalyst that selected in this research is Cu(COOH)2 with variation of consistency 0,01% and 0,03%. The option of reaction conditions that selected in this research for temperature are 25oC and 75oC and for reaction time are 2 hours and 4 hours. This research is done in base and acid condition. The reaction is done in a three-neck rounded flask as reactor. The reactor is equipped with condensor and termometer. The quality of the oxidation result is analyzed using silver catalyst. Meanwhile, the quantity of the result is analyzed by titration method and cromatograph method (HPLC). The analysis of the result shows the condition of reaction that resulting higher yield of formic acid for temperature is at 75oC and for reaction time is 4 hours with pH 11. This conditions resulting 74,2% of formic acid yield and 41,1% of glucose conversion. text |
