Summary: | In automotive world, light and strong material is needed to increase energy
efficiency. Beside light and strong, the material must have good erosion resistance
because there is a lot of abrasive particle that can wear the component surface. By
mixing aluminum and nickel metal element, the properties of the metal is
becoming stronger, and more wear resistance so that this material can be the
alternatives for some automotive component.
The specimen that used in this research is Al-Ni alloy. The aim of this work
is to study the effect of nickel addition to pure aluminum to its properties and its
erosion resistance. Al, Al-Ni alloy, and Al-Ni rolled 4% were employed as air jet
erosion test subject. The result of this test is wear loss of metal and it will
converted into wear rate of metal.
The result of this research is Al-Ni Alloy has the lowest wear rate and Al-Ni
rolled 4% has the highest wear rate. Al-Ni has the lowest wear rate because the
existence of Al3Ni phase that make the metal become harder so it will difficult for
alumina particle to erode the metal surface. At the same time Al-Ni rolled 4% has
the highest wear rate in this test. It caused by the existence of crack in Al3Ni
phase that make the metal is easier to erode. |
