EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF SUPPORT TYPES ON RECIPROCATING COMPRESSOR VIBRATION LEVEL

Vibration level of reciprocating equipments is usually greater than that of rotating equipments. This condition is caused by the presence of shaking force produced during acceleration and decelaration of the reciprocating mass. This condition is caused by the presence of shaking force produced during acceleration and decelaration of the reciprocating mass. Several methods are used to isolate vibration of reciprocating equipments, such as insertion of rubber material as a support or using support springs. Those methods can reduce the transmitted vibration. However, there is a question on how much the vibration level of the equipment will change due to alteration of the support type from rigid to flexible. This research aims to compare vibration level of a reciprocating compressor due to alteration of its support structure. In this research, three types of compressor support will be used i.e. : spring, rubber, and rigid. Different types of support can change the stiffness of the structure and produces different vibration level. The results of this research show that the reciprocating compressor with rubber and spring support has higher vibration level compared to that with rigid support. In addition, can be concluded that the vibration level is propotional to the magnitude of FRF at frequency of 1X RPM with correlation factors above 0.9. Therefore, a comparison of FRF magnitude can be used to predict the vibration level of a compressor due to modification of its support. text
