Many activities can be done in the kitchen because of its relatively complex functions, moreover on Sundanese traditional architecture perspective that valued the kitchen not only for its function, but also for the meaning it has. One of the oldest Sundanese traditional community located at the feet of Mount Halimun, Kasepuhan Ciptagelar village, is famous for its very well maintained tradition has their own perspective on how they interpret the meaning of pawon. Cosmological views, prevailing traditional rules, and the publics’ belief about non visible things are the cases that underlie the meaning of pawon in Kasepuhan Ciptagelar. The meaning of pawon not only affects the design of the room but also the activities of local people at pawon which are concerned with sacred matters. The presence of the meanings of pawon in Sundanese traditional architecture is strong enough for research, but unfortunately there are still so many things that have not being revealed yet. And because of that very matter became the basic of this research. Pawon is always seen for its function. Whereas in fact, for certain communities pawon has more meaning and is considered as a part of one’s life. For example, in the Ciptagelar village, pawon dubbed as ‘jantungna imah, keur hirup jeung huripna manusa’ which means that pawon is the heart of a house because that is where the life of a human begins. This research reveals the meanings behind and its influence on the configuration of pawon itself. text |
