Effect of Compaction Pressure and Sintering Temperature on Magnetic Properties of Barium Hexaferrite

Hard magnetic materials are difficult to magnetize and demagnetize. The example of hard magnetic material is barium hexaferrite. Barium hexaferrite can usually be found in electronic devices such as the loudspeaker. In this study the process of making barium hexaferrite magnets was carried out by...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/39613 Hard magnetic materials are difficult to magnetize and demagnetize. The example of hard magnetic material is barium hexaferrite. Barium hexaferrite can usually be found in electronic devices such as the loudspeaker. In this study the process of making barium hexaferrite magnets was carried out by powder metallurgy. A number of raw materials are prepared and mixed using a ball mill machine, then calcined at a temperature of 1200 oC in the furnace. After that, compacting was carried out at 2 tons, 3 tons, 4 tons and 5 tons using a hydraulic press machine. The compacted green body is sintered at a temperature of 1250 oC with a holding time of 2 hours for the first variation. The second variation, magnets are made with the most optimum compacting pressure of 5 tons and then sintered at 1210 oC, 1230 oC, 1250 oC and 1270 oC. The samples that have been made are then characterized to observe the magnetic properties and sample microstructure. Characterization of magnetic properties was carried out using permagraph. The highest remanence value was obtained at 5 tons compaction pressure of 1.64kG and sintering temperature of 1230 oC and 1250 oC of 1.65kG. The highest coercivity value was at compaction pressure of 2 tons and the sintering temperature of 1270 oC was 3,089 kOe. Then XRD characterization was performed to obtain lattice parameters, and the SEM-EDS characterization to observe microstructure and obtain data on the composition of sample elements. text
