Lignin and chitosan are the second most abundant after cellulose. Lignins can be found in nearly all wooden plants, while chitosan can commonly be found in various organisms such as insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and fungi. The goal of this researchis to extract lignin from kraft black liquor pollutants and to synthesize them into an organic coating along with chitosan. Lignins can be directly obtained from kraft black liquor through the process of isolation by means of acidification. Meanwhile, chitosans that are used in this experiment are sold commercially. Both materials have been characterized before use. The organic coating is fabricated with a chitosan base with a variated lignin content of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the chitosan’s weight. Next, testing is done on the coating’s performance in the form of adhesion testing, flexural testing, impact testing, hardness and thickness measurements, and corrosion testing by means of the salt spray test using a simple salt spray device. From the characterization done on the lignin and chitosan, we obtained a lignin content of 93.26% and a chitosan degree of deacetylization of 47%. The results of coating performance shows that the addition of lignin causes a decrease in hardness and an increase in coating thickenss. All coating samples still have low adhesiveness, but a high impact resistance. The addition of lignin also increases the corrosion resistance of the coating. This research is hoped to benefit the advancement of materials science in particular to the use of natural polymers as a renewable resource as well as helping on the environmental issue by using pollutants in a sophisticated visage. text |
