Communities from each region have their own ways of producing artwork, whether in the form of dances, crafts, and up to wastra (cloth). In the process of making various Indonesian wastra diverse techniques were explored—such as batik (wax-resist dye), tie-dye, weaving, etc.—to produce decoration that eventually becomes the characteristic of the wastra. The decoration is also known as motif, a generally repeated pattern so that it becomes a composition which forms a work of art or craft. One of the motifs that has a high appeal is the motif on East Sumba ikat weaving. East Sumba ikat weaving is famous for its figurative motif with themes of the local community's environment, with simple but easily identifiable forms of representation. Crowded and full composition consisting of mixture of various types of figurative motifs is the characteristic of hinggi, a wide and long woven fabric worn as part of the traditional clothing for men in East Sumba. Exploration of East Sumba ikat weaving motif into the characteristics of the Memphis style on fashion products aims to be a form of modern and creative diversification of the visual presentation of these motifs. Visual diversification is achieved through recomposition of the motif following the character of the Memphis style and reselection of the color scheme that will also adapt to the said style as well the development of trends in today's society. text
