Black Soldier Fly ( Hermetia illucens L.) Larvae Cultivation with Soybean Curd Residue and Rotten Avocadoes to Produce High-Protein Larval Biomass
Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens L.) Larva (BSFL) is one of insect larvae that has the ability to convert organic waste into fat and protein-rich biomass. The growth of larvae and their composition, particularly fat and protein, are affected by the type of substrate given during cultivation. The...

Larva (BSFL) is one of insect larvae that has the ability to convert organic waste into fat and protein-rich biomass. The growth of larvae and their composition, particularly fat and protein, are affected by the type of substrate given during cultivation. The purpose of this study was to determine growth of larvae, efficiency of conversion of digested-feed ratio, assimilation efficiency ratio, waste reduction index, as well as protein and fat composition of the larvae that were cultivated with three different substrates; soybean curd residue, rotten avocado, and the mixture of soybean curd residue and rotten avocado with one-to-one ratio. The cultivation was carried out inside 35 x 28 cm cultivation trays which were stored in a screen house with a temperature range of 19 - 38.5 ?, relative humidity range of 34.9 - 99.2%, and light intensity range of 0.03 - 46.8 W/m2. Protein content of the harvested biomass was determined using a Kjeldahl method, while the fat content was determined using a Soxhlet method. In this study, the length of the larvae reached 2.2 - 2.3 cm with a weight of 233 - 267 mg/larvae. The fat and protein content of Black Soldier Fly Larvae reached up to 20.8 - 21.2% dry weight and 47.2 - 48.9% dry weight respectively. The calculated efficiency of conversion of digested-feed ratio was 5.4 – 18.0%, with an assimilation efficiency ratio of 25.6 – 27.9%, and waste reduction index of 0.95 – 1.04. text |
