Summary: | Exploring about electricity has been done since ancient times until now. Progresses of it didn’t produce a big result until the late nineteenth century, engineers were able to put electricity into industrial and residential area for usage in daily life. The rapid developments of the electrical equipment and technology within this period brought us the advances of electricity as a source of energy that remains the vital backbone of our modern industries which made the world what it is today. To deliver the electricity, today is commonly use the High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) electricity system. But there is some problem occur, HVAC transmission can not be used to deliver large power through a great distance, make this as one of the disadvantages of HVAC electricity system. The unification of the electrical system by using HVAC transmission also can cause electrical disturbances in one area spread to other areas, as happened in some major countries. As a solution, we can use HVDC electricity system to solved problem like mention above. Because there is some advantages of using HVDC electricity system. That’s why, nowaday a lot of experiment has been done in HVDC electricity system. On this thesis we focus on HVDC cables as a part of HVDC electricity system. The use of XLPE cables for High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) transmission has been successful up to now. But the use of XLPE cables (polymer insulated cables) for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission are still in development due to space charge phenomenon that occurs in cables under DC stress. Regarding to correlation between conduction current and space charge, that in the previous test result experiment showing that conduction current measurement results increases conductivity with temperature and voltage applied on cable, which means can also increasing of charge flow through the insulation and also more likely space charge is highly probably occur on the cable. When this things happen, which next will
give a threat to the reliability in operation of the HVDC power cables. Because it will affect
the insulation performances, either in term of degradation of insulation or ageing that can led
into early breakdown. This explain why this two kind of measurement is very important to
observe the future of usage XLPE as a good insulation for HVDC cables. In the previous
experiment, conduction current measurement and space charge measurement is done separately
in a different set-up. And every each measurement is take much time. Sometimes one project
experiment can take time up to couple of weeks or even couple of months. In this thesis, we
will do both of measurements in one set-up experiment. The purpose is to get result from both
measurement in more shorter time. So in the future we can do more experiment project, which
will led to better understanding about conduction current mechanism and space charge
phenomenon on HVDC cables. So the experiment in this thesis is to compare the conduction
current characteristic, current value and also the space charge profile between the individual test with the simultaneous test. |
