Summary: | Heritage trees in a city are old trees that fulfil the criteria of a heritage object and has historical values that can be deemed as a conserved trees. The heritage trees are formed within a long period of time. A heritage tree has a high historic value and tends to be dominated by a huge physical appearance. In many literatures it is said that trees are embodied high physical and ecological values that contribute to urban sustainability. Established as the capital city of the Dutch governance in the early 20th century, Bandung is exceptionally potential for retaining numerous heritage trees within the oldest area of the city. Stretching out around most streets and boulevards of old Bandung, the heritage trees are potential component that make up the urban landscape character of Bandung. The scope of this study is limited to old trees found in the public space, Right Of Way (ROW), and historical significance in the heritage areas of Bandung during the Dutch governance era. Potential heritage trees commonly form the street corridor of old Bandung which currently are qualitatively and quantitatively decreasing due to lack of priority in heritage trees conservation in the urban development. Understanding the values and meaning of a heritage tree need to be socialized to the public through launching a heritage trail. Accordingly, designing a heritage trail in Bandung represent the context of heritage tree during the Dutch governance era. Moreover, designing a heritage trail is a concept of intervention to conserve living elements. By mapping out and prioritizing heritage tree corridors produce heritage trees routes that start from The City Hall Park to Pramuka park. The proposed design of Bandung heritage tree trails provides educational medium for understanding the values and meanings of heritage trees in the urban area. The outputs of this thesis are policy, guidelines, plan, and programmes. |
