Traditionally, sowthistle (Sonchus arvensis L.) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) had efficacy for treating gout, wound, ulcer, and inflammation. Both plants were expected to have pain reliever activity. The aim of this study was to determine the analgesic activity of sowthistle leaves extract and roselle calyces extract as a single-agent or in combination in Swiss Webster mice. Both extracts were tested using the writhing test method and tail immersion test method. There were nine test groups, (1) positive control (CMC-Na 1%), (2) comparative drug, (3) sowthistle extract 50mg/kg bw, (4) sowthistle extract 100mg/kg bw, (5) roselle extract 50mg/kg bw, (6) roselle extract 100mg/kg bw, (7) combination of sowthistle and roselle extract 25-25mg/kg bw, (8) combination of sowthistle and roselle extract 50- 50mg/kg bw and (9) combination of sowthistle and roselle extract 100-100mg/kg bw. The result showed that the groups of sowthistle extract 50 and 100mg/kg bw had peripheral analgesic activity by showing significant (p<0,05) decrease in mice's writhing compared to the control group in the writhing test. Meanwhile, in the tail immersion test method, roselle extract 100mg/kg bw showed significant central analgesic activity compared to the control group. In the writhing test method, the combination of sowthistle and roselle extract 50-50mg/kg bw showed a significant difference compared to the positive group but proportional to sowthistle extract 100mg/kg bw. Moreover, in the tail immersion test method, the combination of both extracts showed no better analgesic activity compared to single-agent extract. text
