Description
Summary:Based on the outage data released by PT.PLN, the outages occurred in the 70kV High Voltage transmission line in Malang is dominated by lightning strikes on transmission tower. The main causes of transmission towers being the easy target of lightning strikes are the height of the transmission tower which averages above 30meters and placed on open area. The effects of lightning strikes can produce excess voltage which results flash over on the insulator, even blackouts on the electricity network. Many lightning protection systems are developed to overcome this problem, one of which is the Extended Mask Terminal (EMT). This study will analyze the performance of the 70kV high voltage transmission line against lightning strikes based on current lightning protection devices and outage occurred on transmission lines in Malang. An innovation needs to be done to improve the performance of the transmission network against lightning strikes by installing an EMT on the transmission tower. EMT is a lightning protection system equipped with Early Streamer Emission (ESE), Double Shielded Down Conductor (DSDC), and monitoring devices. The design of the lightning protection system to be installed will refer to the Lightning Detection System (LDS) owned by PT. PLN, so that the design of the protection system can be in accordance with the characteristics of lightning in the transmission tower location. The purpose of this research is to provide a lightning protection system recommendation that is in accordance with the specifications and conditions of the 70kV power grid system in Indonesia.
