Summary: | The emergence of various disability arts communities in various regions in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, Bali and Makassar. In Bandung there is a disability community Bala Vision (Balvi) as the first tunanaetra community to pursue painting activities. This community consists of people with visual impairments in the low vision category (still having remaining vision) and totally blind. Balvi community painting works prove that blind people have an interest and potential in the field of visual arts. Therefore this study was conducted to examine the process of creation, visual predisposition, and the function of art for the Balvi blind community.
The method used in this study is qualitative-quantitative. Qualitative data collection is done by observation, documentation, literature, and interviews. While collecting data quantitatively using the experimental method. The experimental method with the type of Quasi experimental uses a time-series design model, namely by dividing the working period of the Balvi community into periods 1,2, and 3. Experiments are carried out in period 3 by giving treatment to the subject in five meetings. Data analysis was carried out by qualitative methods. The theory used was the Graham Wallas Creation Process and Terry Barret's art criticism method.
The results of this study indicate that the creation process of the blind people consists of the same stages as the ordinary person, because they already have visual experience before becoming blind. There are specialties in the process of creative thinking of blind people namely always starting the work by telling their experiences, doing testing with fingering due to visual limitations, visual experience can be replaced with perceptual experience (feeling, hearing, smelling), recognizing the fields of work in ways that measurable, experience visiting exhibitions and discussions with artists to support the abilities of cognition and appreciation of blind people. The work created with blind people has a visual tendency, namely lines created in vertical and horizontal patterns, streaks of lines and colors are not full or even, color selection is based on the importance of expressing an idea symbolically, abstract form as a way for blind visualists to interpret their perceptual experiences. The function of art for blind people is as a medium of expression, socializing, self-actualization, namely developing oneself according to their potential and recognition from the community for the abilities achieved, sublimation media to express feelings and experiences they have while still alert, increase self-confidence, give value to education, and economic income.
