Coal as one of alternative energy sources for fossil fuel is a good choice because of its massive quantity in Indonesia. Diesel power plants unit in Indonesia still depend on fossil fuel, so that there are lots of diesel power plants that cannot be operated because of they cannot get the fossil fuel. Coal gasification is a method to convert coal into gas and there is a gas engine technology which can use gas as its main or support fuel. With that technology, it is possible to apply coal gasification gas as a fuel of diesel engine in every diesel power plant. In use of coal gasification gas on diesel engine in every diesel power plants in Indonesia, the compatibility has to be observed. First, from the equivalence of the fuel, Pesanggaran diesel power plant as one of the biggest diesel power plants (can produce up to 70MW) in Indonesia requires 1.31 kg coal per liter of HSD used. Second, from the component modifications on the diesel engine in order to use gas include HSD and gas fuel tank, speed control system, rack limiter, and back-up fuel system. Coal gasification gas can be used in wider areas, as we know Indonesia has a massive amount of coal resource. So it is better to use coal and convert it into something that has a bigger value. Coal price also cheaper if we compare to fossil fuels. Cost analysis of this technology utilization is suggested to be done in order to know whether this technology is profitable or not. text |
