With such condition where there was no clear boundaries and mingle with Indigenous citizens, a notion arises that shophouses in Bandung Chinatown have a distinctive characteristic as a reflection of Chinese immigrant cultural adaptation to respond the surrounding social condition. Research focus comprise variables of façade element such as façade height, roof form and decoration, opening form and decoration, veranda and balcony form and decoration, façade section profile, and façade integrity and diversity on each location. Shophouse was selected as research object because it has a potency to show how house form is affected by socio-cultur factor. Selected research locations are four streets that surrounding Pasar Baru, namely Oto Iskandardinata street, which formerly was Pasar Baru street, with north boundary at Bandung Railway Station and south boundary at Asia Afrika-Sudirman street, which formerly was Great Post Road, Pasar Utara street, Pasar Selatan street, and Pasar Barat street. Obtained data from observation is bulding façade photo. Then discovered characteristic from Bandung shophouse was compared with Southeast Asia shophouse characteristic from secondary data to reveal the characteristic similarities and differences. Generally, façade characteristic of Bandung premodern shophouse is the same with façade characteristic of Southeast Asia premodern shophouse. But Bandung pre-modern shophouse decorative element shows uniqueness which has no Chinese decorative element whatsoever on column and wall at veranda and balcony. This is due to unique historical background, which affected Chinese community and shophouse diaspora period in Bandung. text |
