Description
Summary:In this modern era, the treatment towards identity within a place had gradually decreased and eventually diminishes the authenticity of the place. This condition according to Edwards Relph is described as placelessness. In Indonesia, diminishing the authenticity of place in airport designs had become a common practice to accommodate general design standards which is highly affected by efficiency-related issues as stated by Dirjen Perhubungan Udara. The research problem considers the underlying fact that every region in Indonesia has its distinct character that is highly potential to be developed as tourism destination but design interpretation efforts being found on Airport Terminal nowadays in Indonesia infusing modern and vernacular form had not been deeply explored. The design which will be achieved through the study is to create an airport terminal which will give a first impression of the place identity towards arriving passangers and to create a memory of the local culture towards departing passangers. Building expression through local Architectural elements will be utilized to create user’s perception of the terminal. The basic concept of the design is to integrate Indonesian character with the local sense of Alor. Methods used in the produce design output includes using the local approach in design. These methods were chosen as strategy to achieve local character within an airport terminal design according to the eco-airport principal. The result of integration between Neo – Vernacular Architecture and Contemporary Architecture is used as basic development of design concept for Mali Alor Airport terminal. This was achieved by integrating airport building and its users with its natural surrounding and using local elements with a modern approach. The basic principal of the design results in adopting the proportion of traditional building of Alor and integrating it with its traditional village landscape. The use of local material such as synthetic grass-like material for roof cover, secondary skin made of natural materials such as weaved bamboo pattern, composite wood, and local natural stone to enhance landscaping esthetically and functionally was also considered to enhance the sense of local identity within the airport terminal design
