Summary: | Bandung is known as creative and historic city in Indonesia. The creativity can be
developed with a good understanding through local identity. The local identity of
Bandung can be seen through a lot of old building across the city. Nevertheless,
today a lot of old building in Bandung are no longer used maximally because
typology and function of the building are not matching anymore. This
phenomenon appears because the process of preservation mostly done in aesthetic
aspect. This condition has an issue, that the existence of old building will be
forgotten which will lead to loss of Bandung's local identity. Besides that,
Bandung as a creative city nowadays focused on a creative economy sector,
proved by many communities in Bandung work in the creative industry, such as
fashion, culinary, and technology. Therefore, in 2025 Indonesia will experience
demography bonus that makes the workforce dominated by millennial generation.
By this time, there will be a transformation in economic system to the new digital
economy era. It also affects people’s ways of work. Transformation of generation
in workforce and how people work in digital economy era create a new need of
workplace in the future. One of the solutions for the new style of workplaces that
are being developed today is coworking space, a workplace with flexible shared
facilities. However, coworking space is not just a place to work but also a place
that potentially can create a community.
Those major issues happened in Bandung can be a win-win solution for each other
at once. Bandung can use the old building that becomes local identity as
coworking space for creative class in the future. The concept is to assemble the
past (old building as a place) and the future (creative society as a new workforce)
in coworking facilities. The application of the concept is done by design
simulation that produces design criteria of coworking space in the old building
that fit the context of Bandung city. The design simulation uses the theory of third
place (Oldenburg) and adaptive reuse building as a base for the concept.
Coworking space as a third-place makes an informal place for community in
Bandung to work and gather. By changing the function of old buildings that build
across Bandung to become the new workplace for creative class (coworking
space), Bandung success to maintain the city identity and give a new workplace or
public space for the community to develop their creativity and increase city
income. |
