THE STUDY OF MORPHOLOGY IN RESPONDING TSUNAMI BASED ON THE RESILIENCE PRINCIPLES CASE STUDY: MEURAKSA AND JAYA BARU DISTRICT, BANDA ACEH

Congestion and chaotic evacuation process on the earthquake followed by tsunami’s issue in 2012 showed that Banda Aceh is still vulnerable to disaster. If the similar situation happens again it is possible that the casualties will be more than the 2004 tsunami. In the case of resilience, city’s m...

If the similar situation happens again it is possible that the casualties will be more than the 2004 tsunami. In the case of resilience, city’s morphology can influence the community’s ability to respond to disasters. It is pivotal for tsunami, when a person only has limited time (<30 minutes) to evacuate and take refuge into a safe place. This research aims to formulate a recommendation for enhancement of morphology in response to tsunami based on resilience principle in Banda Aceh. Several villages in Meuraksa and Jaya Baru districts were selected as study areas. Data collection methods using through observation, questionnaire and interviews to the community living around escape building. This research using mixed method in which qualitative analysis is used to identify morphology’s characteristic and social condition related to evacuation plan. While quantitative analysis is used to formulate street network’s morphology based on resilience principles. The results show that the street network’s morphology that connect to the escape building is not ideal in responding to the tsunami. Enhancement through improvement street integration is accomplished by minimizing messy or disorientating streets and making the hierarchical structure of streets clearer. Thus the community are quicker and easier to evacuate to the escape building. text
