Summary:Train is the most efficient and effective of all ground modes transportation. In an operation, train could deliver both passangers and also materials. Train operation is often supported by shunting operation. Shunting operation is an operation of switching rail track for a trainset. Shunting operation is done by a specially designed locomotive which is called the Shunting Locomotive. This final project report is about the basic design of shunting locomotive, comprising of structural integrity of underframe and tractive performance required for shunting activity. Basic design results in the minimum tractive force requirement of 6,471.74 kgf in operation. Basic design of underframe structure results in the wheelbase of 5,500 mm with the derailment quotient value of 0.295, the maximum critical speed when curving is 55 km/h, and the dimensions of 7,850 mm length, and 2,800 mm wide. Calculation on the required power results in the selection of a of power generator with minimal power of 320 HP, i.e Diesel Engine CAT ACERT® C-9 with rated power of 350 HP. Structural integrity analysis of underframe results in a deflection value of 3.67 mm and maximum Von Misses stress value of 249.75 MPa which has Safety Factor value of 1.42 to SM490 material for the worst potential load case. From the analysis of both strength and deflection aspect, it can be concluded that the underframe structure could function well in shunting operation.
