Description
Summary:Municipal solid waste is becoming a big problem in Indonesia. A massive volume of the waste that have been buried and burned directly will caused bad effect to environment. Heat from municipal solid waste combustion indicated that there is a heating value of the waste. The heating value still can be increased and it is possible to make it as a solid fuel. Torrefaction is a heat treatment process to increase energy density of municipal solid waste. Rice became a model of municipal solid waste to be converted as solid fuel by using Torrefaction. Previous experiment result showed that rice had unique characteristics compared to leaves, twigs, orange skins, and banana skins as the other model of municipal solid waste. This experiment aimed to find out the characteristics of rice at torrefaction. The parameter of torrefaction designed based on the analytic and experiment before. Rice dominantly composed by starch, it is different from the other municipal solid waste which dominantly composed by lignocellulose. The differences became a principal factor to perform a different heat treatment effects. After the experiment, there is a similar result of heat treatment effect of rice with the other sample that dominantly composed by starch. Still, there is an increasing calorific value from the rice torrefaction result until 400 °C. The physic characteristics of the rice torrefaction product are black in color, dry, and brittle.
