Description
Summary:One way to increase the production capacity in a mining industryis to modify the bed of a dump truck to increase its payload capacity. This modification of the dump truck provide a chance for local company to participate in mining activities. This modification should involve labor and material around the area to provide an added value to Indonesia’s economy. This final project analyzed the static strength of a HD 465-7 dump truck, the most common truck to be used in Indonesian mining. This truck have a dimension of 9.3 m x 4.5 m x 4.6 m, a maximum speed of 70 km/h, and a weight capacity of 55 tons. Static strength analysis is required if a local company wants to modify the dump body HD465-7 in order to increase the truck’s capacity. The first step of the analysis was to make the model of the dump body with Solidworks 2012 software. The load on the dump body was calculated, and then simulated ANSYS Workbench v.11.0 software . Modification to the dump body would be conducted, if necessary. The maximum stress allowed by the design criteria is specified to be 83.33 MPa. The maximum stress obtained from the existing design was 168 MPa. To solve this problem, the writer then modified the front support and the rib-end to decrease the stress concentration on those area. The maximum stress obtained after modification was 81 Mpa, which is below the target value. The conclusion drawn from the simulation is modifying the stress concentration area could reduce the maximum stress, therefore the dump body can be pronounced safe based on the design criteria.
