Since the SPH measures properties of each particle in fluid flow instead of properties of each node or grid, it is more convenient to define force from the flow field surrounding the body instead of pressure and shear stress distribution at the surface of the body. After the force determination code was developed, SPH simulation was conducted using an existing open-source code. The force was examined at various Reynolds number for a flat plate that is set normal to the flow, acting as a bluff body. The force obtained from simulation was compared with the experimental result in towing tank. It is found that the time step, size of force calculation domain, number of particles in SPH simulation, grid size in force calculation, and also the type of solver code greatly affected the accuracy of force determination code. text |

In CFD, meshless method is developed as an alternative to grid-based
method. Among many kinds of existing meshless method, this final project will
focus on SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamic), which approximates
continuum (fluid) with particles and calculate properties of each particle based
on the properties of neighboring particles using a smoothing or kernel function.
To complete the SPH simulation, some form of post-processing must be
developed. A code for flow velocity field and vorticity contour visualization and
a force determination code were developed to measure the force generated by a
bluff body from SPH simulation. Since the SPH measures properties of each
particle in fluid flow instead of properties of each node or grid, it is more
convenient to define force from the flow field surrounding the body instead of
pressure and shear stress distribution at the surface of the body.
After the force determination code was developed, SPH simulation was
conducted using an existing open-source code. The force was examined at
various Reynolds number for a flat plate that is set normal to the flow, acting as
a bluff body. The force obtained from simulation was compared with the
experimental result in towing tank. It is found that the time step, size of force
calculation domain, number of particles in SPH simulation, grid size in force
calculation, and also the type of solver code greatly affected the accuracy of
force determination code. |
