Among all types of crashes, frontal collisions are dominating the number of accidents occured. System which can absorb energy from frontal collisions is needed to ensure the safety of passenger in their compartment. One of the energy absorption mechanisms in the structure is axial collapse sequentially called progressive buckling. This mechanism can limit the deceleration level of the vehicle during accident and lessen the damage of the passenger compartment, which lower the possibility of passenger injury. In this research, top-hat crash box in the form of thin walled columns with spotweld joint under low velocity axial load are studied. This research focuses on the evaluation of the spotweld pitch effect to impact performance and solid element application in spotweld modelling. Explicit non-linear finite elemen code LS-DYNA was used for the numerical analysis. Mean crushing force decreases since the extent of spotweld pitch based on numerical analysis. Impact performace of solid element spotweld model give better acuracy than beam element model, especially for small number of spotweld pitch. text |
