During operation, excessive wear and fracture of wheel bucket teeth are the major problem which should be avoided. However, a low wear rate can be accepted. Wear resistance related with hardness. Very hard steel usually has good wear resistance. However it is britle and susceptible to fracture during digging process. Therefore, both hardness and resistance to fracture should be optimized by alloy selection and heat treatment method. Field testing of wheel bucket teeth is not practical. Fortunately, Jet Erosion Testing can be used to simulate its wear phenomena baesd on the similiarity of impact energy intensity and wear rate. Those properties can be obtained by heat treating of steel with chemical composition of 0,32% C ; 0,98% Mn; 1,14% Si; 1,32% Cr; 0,10% Ni; 0,22% Mo; 0,009% V , resulted in martensite, retained austenite, and carbide in its microstructure. This type of steel has a good wear resistance with reasonable value of impact energy so that it can be used for wheel bucket teeth. text |
