Description
Summary:In many industries, there are a lot of material that have high hardness and good wear resistant. High hardness can be produced from Martensite phase in Steel after hardening process, which can be all the way through its thickness. In that case steel will be brittle. AISI 4340 is one of steel that after hardening process will have high hardness from surface until its core. The purpose of this study is to know the influence of nitriding and tempering processes on hardness distribution of AISI 4340 that have been carburized and quench hardened. In this study, pack nitriding was used with Urea 40% as Nitrogen source. AISI 4340 was nitrided at 540oC for one hour. The result of AISI 4340 surface hardness after nitriding process is 1047 HV0.5. That hardness teoritically have good wear resistant. The core of AISI 4340 has low hardness of 383 HV0.5. Nitrided AISI 4340 has good toghness too. Tempered AISI 4340 has lower surface hardness 459 HV0.5 and 357 HV0.5 its core. Nitrided AISI 4340 has better wear resistant and better toughness then tempered AISI 4340.
