Description
Summary:Indonesia has a great potential of solar energy which can be utilized by using solar cells. Solar cells can be made from high-purity silicon. Silicon is usually made from silica sand through extraction techniques at high temperatures. Silicon can also be produced from rice husk ash through the reduction process. Rice husk ash contains high purity silica, which is about 87% to 97%, depends on the production process. This final project aimed to observing the effect of KMnO4 treatment on purity of produced silicon by varying leaching temperatures. In this study, we use rice husk ash from the market. We purify the ash using HCl solution at two different temperatures, i.e. 70 oC and 90 oC. The purified ash is then treated with KMnO4 solution at various concentrations. Magnesiothermic reduction process was then carried at temperature of 700 oC for one hour in ambient environment. The products was leached using two different solutions consist of HCl, HF and CH3COOH. We utilize XRD to identify the crystal structures on the products. It’s shown that purification of rice husk ash at 90 oC produced high purity silicon about 94%. KMnO4 treatment of 0.1M concentration enhance the silicon content on products
