INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/41039 A plowshare, an important component of the mouldboard plow, is assembled to cut soil during plowing operation. Since moving plowshares surface is constantly in contact to soil, it is required to be made from high wear resistant material. Currently, the properties of mouldboard plow directly tested during tillage operation on the field. This research is aimed to choose other testing method which similar to tillage operation and can be performed in a laboratory. Due to the similarity in wear phenomena and the wear rate value, frictional wear testing is selected to simulate tillage operation. This research is purposed to improve the wear resistance of plowshare steel by heat treatment. Quench hardened steel specimen with hardness of 52 HRC results in the highest wear resistance. The original steel of plowshare has chemical composition of 0.45% C, 1.58% Mn, 0.22% Si, 0.01% P, 0.01 % S, 0.5% Ni, and 0.03% Cr with martensite and retained austenite in its microstructure. This research also reveals that same hardness of two specimen may have different wear rate. Specimen containing martensite - ferrite shows better wear resistance than the specimen containing martensite – retained austenite at the same hardness of 41 HRC. It can be concluded that wear resistance of plowshare cannot be determined only by its hardness. text
