A CORRELATIONAL STUDY BETWEEN MOTIVATION AND SELF-PERCEIVED ENTREPRENEUR COMPETENCE

In Indonesia, which is a growing country, entrepreneurs are giving a very big impacts through Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). SMEs dominating the impacts on Indonesian GDP to 60.34% in 2016. Entrepreneurship students of School of Business and Management Institut Teknologi Bandung (SBM ITB) batch 2019 entered SBM ITB in the same year, to join SBM ITB vision in supporting entrepreneurship in Indonesia. Every student in the program is obligated to build a business with their friends in form of a team. There are courses that supports them and other facilitations such as mentoring with practitioners. Business education like this is a very good support for entrepreneurial career. Entrepreneurship students of SBM ITB batch 2019 is facing their graduation soon in October 2019 and are going are having available options to be chosen as their career path. The best is to become an entrepreneur. However, they might want to face working experience or taking another study right after the graduation. It causes businesses to put into closure, such as Tribute Watch company which is a company built by 3 entrepreneurs from the group of students. The entrepreneurs are going to part way. When they all going to choose a path on becoming an entrepreneur, the minimized failure risk is better for the entrepreneurs, country, and any stakeholders. The provision they should bring is not going to be corporate solutions, instead should be a personal suggestion to minimize failure, considering they have choice to choose their own path in personal way after graduation. This research will give them supply to enter further entrepreneurial journey. Entrepreneurship is full of complexity caused by macro-environmental factors. However, the most important part in building a venture is the entrepreneur itself as the human behind all decisions. Human always driven by motivation which caused someone to be motivated in doing something. The famous Theory of Human Motivation developed by Abraham Maslow can indicate motivations into five stages. Motivation is proved to have association with successfulness, the hanging question is which one is the having the highest correlation with successfulness which can minimize failures probability. The successfulness of an entrepreneur is making businesses they lead survive, growing or scaling. Highly successful entrepreneurs are seeing themselves as highly competent, and the opposite applies. Gaylen N. Chandler & Erik Janssen have developed an assessment for entrepreneur competence through self-assessing process, which proved strong relationship with entrepreneur successfulness. This research is meant to unveil the correlation between motivation and entrepreneur competence and which motivation is the having the strongest association with it. The results showing that self-actualization motivation is having the strongest correlation with entrepreneur competence. Recommendation for Tribute Watch entrepreneurs and fellow entrepreneurs of entrepreneurship program of SBM ITB batch 2019 is to start considering business when they have enough esteem and trying to actualize themselves. Further research can include other scope or other assessment method for motivation and successfulness variable.
