Summary: | 4-nitrophenol (PNP) is commonly used as pesticides, drugs, dye stuffs, and leather fungisides. Although it has been used widely, PNP is listed as a priority toxic pollutant according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Therefore, sensitive and simple analytical methods for PNP determination have to be developed. In this study, we developed a voltammetric method for PNP determination using the oxidation peak of PNP to simplify the measurements by eliminating solution deoxygenation step. However the oxidative product of PNP is a dimer compound deposited on the electrode surface, which will decrease anodic peak current in the next measurements. To solve this problem, we used carbon paste electrode (CPE) and pencil electrode because any compound deposited on the surface of the electrodes can be easily removed by rubbing the surface of the electrodes on a clean paper. The second oxidation peak of PNP at potential of 0.88
V vs Ag/AgCl (CPE) and 0.90 V vs Ag/AgCl (pencil electrode) were used in this
study. Analytical determination of PNP with differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) tecnique showed that the CPE and pencil electrode had good performances. The linear range of both calibration curves were in the concentration range of 10
J..LM to 90 J..LM with limit of detection (LOD) of 5.70 J..LM (CPE) and 7.80 J..LM
(pencil electrode). Percent recovery for spike samples determination of PNP with
CPE and pencil electrode were 87%-106% showing good accuracy ofthe method.
