Description
Summary:Breaker tip is a component used in the process of crushing minerals in the cement industry. This component should has good toughness and wear resistance. Most of breaker tip is still to be imported, only few of them are made by local industries. The local products still have to deal with problems of low wear resistance and fracture at the neck of breaker tip. The Fracture causes subsequently difficulties for the maintenance technician during its replacement. This furthermore led the users to compromise the criteria, in which the hardness value could be lower, as long as no fracture occurred. Based on these criteria, the research made use of the casting material AISI 4140 that is classified as medium carbon steel and considerably can be used for components of breaker tip. This study found out the optimum mechanical properties of cast AISI 4140 and analyzed the correlation of hardness, impact value and maximum tensile strength as well as qualitative wear properties. This has been undertaken by setting the temperature of tempering ranging from 205, 380, 425 and 540 oC. The study determined the optimum combination of mechanical properties for AISI 4140 material used for breaker tip components by the tempering temperature of 425 oC.
