Summary:Flapping of bird wings produce lift and thrust simultaneously. This phenomenon inspired us to create a thrust produced flapping wings machine. Flapping motion of a bird wing is a complex case in aerodynamics involving fluid structure interaction. Thrust generatied by plunging wing can be assessed by a computational method which solving the interaction of fluid motion and structure. Bird wings modeled as a flat plate plugged vertically with hinge and clamp condition at the leading edge. During the downstroke airflow is pulled by the wing motion until at the end and after a while during the upstroke it is pushed back due to the wing structure flexibility producing maximum thrust and vice versa. As a result, two peak of thrust are generated in each cycle. Resulted thrust is influenced by frequency of the plunging motion. Maximum thrust increases with increasing frequency of plunging until reaching the given value of the frequency.
