Description
Summary:Indonesian automotive industry grows along with the economic growth. The number of sales of motor vehicles in Indonesia is increasing. It was predicted to increase drastically in the next few years. As a consequence, automotive components industry becomes a promising industry because of the development in the automotive market. One of the essential fast moving parts is the clutch. Clutch connects the engine and the transmission, allowing smooth transition from one set of gear ratio to another. In its application, clutch must not fail. Therefore, some type of tests must be conducted to ensure that the clutch performs as desired. This research work concerns with the clutch durability testing. In the previous work, design, manufacturing, and testing of a working model of clutch durability testing device has been performed (Widjanarko, 2008). As a continuation of the above, an automation system that allows the device to operate and repeat the testing cycle has been designed. This automation system is built using electronic hardware which consists of a main board, a set of IC’s, switches, relays, and contactors. After a series of experiments, a prototype of the automatic control system is built and tested. The prototype shows that the clutch durability testing may be operated automatically for several testing cycles. However, the resulting prototype is still not reliable. There are a few things that need to be developed such as the improvement of the automation system and the addition of a torque measurement system.
