PERISTALTIC PUMP DOSING SYSTEM DESIGN FOR TITRANT FLOW RATE CONTROL ACTUATOR IN COLOR-BASED SELF-STOPPING TITRATOR

Titration is one of the standard methods in measuring the concentration of a solution. For conventional titrations, chemical burettes are needed. Burette is a cylindrical laboratory glass apparatus that has a measuring line and tap plug at the bottom. This is used to drip a number of liquid reagents...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/41701 Titration is one of the standard methods in measuring the concentration of a solution. For conventional titrations, chemical burettes are needed. Burette is a cylindrical laboratory glass apparatus that has a measuring line and tap plug at the bottom. This is used to drip a number of liquid reagents in experiments that require precision, such as in titration experiments with accuracy of up to ± 0.05 mL. In testing water quality, to determine the amount of BOD and COD, the titration process is needed with good accuracy. For beginners who are not accustomed to titration process, determining the endpoint of a titration based on color changes is quite difficult to do because the eye can misjudge colors. As a result, users sometimes have passed the end point of the titration by reading the wrong volume of the titrant. To reduce the error in reading the titrant volume from the titration, a system that can drain the titrant with a smaller drop accuracy and can adjust the speed of the titrant flow when approaching the end-point of titration is needed. The peristaltic pump dosing system is designed to drain the titrant in the form of droplets through a silicone hose with a size of 3mm O.D, 1mm I.D. The DC motor component will rotate the rotating wheel and pump the titrant peristaltically. The flowrate of the titrate can be adjusted by giving a PWM input to a DC motor. There are 4 modes of controlling the flow rate of titrant droplets: fast mode, slow mode, stop mode and flushing mode. The test results show that the average velocity of the titrant flow for the fast mode is 0.35 seconds / drops, while for the slow mode 0.74 seconds / drops with 25% PWM duty cycle value. text
