Summary: | Makassar Strait is divided into three major basins, they are Kutei Basin, North
Makassar Straits Basin and South Makassar Strait Basin. The deep water
exploration in the Kutei Basin has been started since 1996. Several oil and gas
fields discovered during the deep water exploration. The deep water exploration in
the North Makassar Straits Basin has not been done completely.
This study basically want to analyze geochemical data from several exploration
wells in the study area, so that characteristics of source rock and the potential
hydrocarbon in this area can been known. The next step is to create a model to
determine the distribution model of source rock maturity in the middle of North
Makassar Strait.
The results of laboratory analysis from two exploration wells samples indicate that
the samples have the organic carbon content levels from not good to very good.
The kerogen type of these samples indicates that the samples from Pliocene and
late Upper Miocene age tend to fall into kerogen type III (gas prone kerogen),
while samples from the early Upper Miocene indicate that the samples varied
from kerogen type III (gas prone kerogen) to kerogen type II (oil prone kerogen).
The hydrocarbon potential of the samples indicate that samples from Pliocene and
late Upper Miocene age have a low level of hydrocarbon potential, whereas
samples from the early Upper Miocene age have hydrocarbon potential level from
good enough to good.
The modeling of source rock maturity in the study area use 1D maturity modeling
software and 3D maturity modeling software. 1D maturity modeling software is
used to calibrate the data and to make 1D maturity model. 3D maturity modeling
software is used to create a model of the 3D distribution of source rock maturity.
The distribution model of source rock maturity show that the top of late Upper
Miocene age in the study area is almost entirely immature. The Model at the top
Middle Miocene shows most western area is mature and begin to enter the oil
window, whereas at the Lower Oligocene age shows most of the research area has
mature, the western area has entered the gas window, while the central and eastern
area already entered the oil window.
iv
The results of the source rock maturity analysis in the middle of North Makassar
Strait indicate that the source rock in the Oligocene and Middle Miocene age in
this area is mature to generate hydrocarbons. The Middle of the North Makassar
Strait still has a good potential for the discovery of hydrocarbons, so it is still very
interesting to be explored further. |
