Summary: | Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) is a creeper-perennial herb which has a unique triterpenoid saponin namely asiaticoside. This compound has many kinds of pharmacology effects, with one of them being anti-inflammatory on skin. The asiaticoside accumulation in gotu kola can be increased by elicitation with chitosan which also has plant growth enhancing effect. This research aimed to determine the growth rate and the asiaticoside accumulation of gotu kola by adding 7,5 ppm, 15 ppm and 30 ppm of chitosan as an elicitor in Hoagland’s medium (10 dilution factor). Cultivation was carried out for 30 days in a hydroponics system using glass with diameter of 5 cm and height of 7 cm. The determination of growth curve was done by using logistic growth mathematical model, while the asiaticoside content was determined by heat reflux extraction and spectrophotometric method using wavelength at 277 nm. The results of this research showed that the highest specific growth rate of gotu kola reached 0,3826 day-1 with 7,5 ppm of chitosan as an elicitor. Meanwhile gotu kola which were treated by adding 15 ppm of chitosan achieved the highest asiaticoside content with the value of 1,96 % g asiaticoside per g biomass dry weight. |
