HARDWARE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF RUNWAY EDGE LIGHT DRONE-MOUNTED PHOTOMETRY

In aviation industry, there’s a lighting guidance system that give aid to pilots when it comes to landing in night or bad weather condition. One of the light system is named Runway Edge Light which replace runway’s marker in low visibility condition, and this lamps require regular maintenance. Hence...

One of the light system is named Runway Edge Light which replace runway’s marker in low visibility condition, and this lamps require regular maintenance. Hence, a photometric instrument was designed to help this maintenance, consists of “data acquisition” subsystem and “main station” subsystem that communicate to each other wirelessly. In this paper, we will discuss specifically the hardware design of the two subsistems, and more specifically on the sensor controls contained in the data acquisition subsystem. There are 2 types of sensors used, namely photodiode BH1750 module to measure the illuminance and PIXY camera modules to determine the distance between instrument and the measured light. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory located at Balai Teknik Penerbangan (Aviation Engineering Center), Indonesia Ministry of Transportation. The test was carried out by measuring a runway edge light Thorn EL-EAH model. The results obtained that the sensors contained in the data acquisition subsistem have been successful in reading and sending data needed for photometric calculations. text
