In a village named Sekarputih there lived a man named Mbah Sukodok. He was concerned about the deforestation around his village. As a result of deforestation, Sekarputih village experienced prolonged drought, the wells became dry and the rice fields could not be irrigated. In an effort to restore the forest to its previous glory, Mbah Sukodok created the fairy tale "Peri Setyowati". The Fairy tale spread from person to person orally, without any visualization. This Fairy tale had a figurative element and a message of protecting the forest. Fairy tales are one of the methods of learning for children which is considered very effective. The message of protecting the forest contained in “Peri Setyowati” fairy tale had to be conveyed to children, as they are the next generation in protecting their own villages and forests. This research is to find out whether children understand and comprehend the tale, by using data retrieval in the form of pictures of children's stories. This study found two types of images and four elements of the image which can be used as a measurement in understanding the story. It is found that each child's understanding is different, but it can be concluded that all children understand fairy tales with their respective versions. text
