of the sea, seaweed production in Indonesia is very abundant. Seaweed is a very
abundant source of biomass and can be used as raw material for products that have
high added value. One of the products that can be produced from seaweed is
activated carbon. Activated carbon is one material that can be used in various
fields. The characteristics of activated carbon with high surface area and porosity,
good conductivity makes activated carbon suitable for use in various fields. This
research is focused on obtaining activated carbon with good quality and quantity.
The process of making activated carbon consists of carbonization and activation
processes. The carbonization process carried out is hydrothermal carbonization
proceeded by the activation of CO2 using a furnace. This research is focused on the
manufacture of activated carbon made from seaweed using a hydrothermal
carbonization process using activators KOH, CaCl2, and ZnCl2. Variations made
in this study are temperature, variations in activators, and the ratio of activators to
raw materials. To eliminate ash content in activated carbon, demineralization will
be carried out using HF.
Activated carbon produced from seaweed Sargassum sp. has a surface area of 100-
1800 m2/g with an average pore size of 1-75 nm. The yield of hydrochar reached
67.9% in the hydrothermal carbonization process and the yield of activated carbon
reached 27.2% at 250oC carbonization temperature with CaCl2 activator and
impregnation ratio is 2 (two). |
