Javan Gibbon (Hylobates moloch, Audebert 1798) Density and Abundance Estimation in 2019 in Simpang Mountain Natural Reserve and Tilu Mountain Natural Reserve, West Java
The javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch, Audebert 1798) is a primate species endemic to West and Central Java. Its existence is on the verge of extinction due to the decrease of habitat and illegal hunting. Simpang Mountain Natural Reserve (Simpang MNR) and Tilu Mountain Natural Reserve (Tilu MNR) is a p...

Its existence is on the verge of extinction due to the decrease of habitat and illegal hunting. Simpang Mountain Natural Reserve (Simpang MNR) and Tilu Mountain Natural Reserve (Tilu MNR) is a priority region in the conservation act of javan gibbons in Indonesia. Javan gibbon population data in both locations are crucial as the base data to determine conservation methods. However, the most recent data available for both locations are the result of a research conducted a long time ago in 2008. A most recent data is required to conduct the conservation program of javan gibbons. This research aims to estimate the density and abundance of javan gibbons in both Simpang MNR and Tilu MNR, to acquire the latest data needed to support the conservation of javan gibbons. Initial interviews and secondary data processing were conducted to obtain survey track locations. Primary data was gathered using the line transect method which measured ± 2 kilometers, which in turn was determined using purposive random sampling. Both locations had nine tracks each. The density data was obtained using analysis conducted by Distance 7.2 software. It was then extrapolated based on the representative area of the habitat, which resulted in the abundance data. Based on five sightings, it is estimated that Simpang MNR has a javan gibbon density of 0,555 groups/km2 and an abundance of 49 groups, while Tilu MNR has a density of 3,268 groups/km2 and an abundance of 93 groups. text |
