The mangrove forests of Segara Anakan in Central Java, Indonesia, have been affected by high levels of sedimentation which could affect mangrove settlement, distribution, and consequently carbon stock. Previous research have reported variations of mangrove communities within the Segara Anakan with 6,126 hectares of total area; but the variation effect to carbon stock is still unknown. This study aimed to: (1) Describe and compare mangrove community structures on four sites in Segara Anakan; and (2) Estimating carbon stocks in the four sites. Community structures are determined through vegetation analysis method, calculation of the Importance Value Index (INP), Diversity Index, Similarity Index, and Dominance. The carbon components measured includes aboveground living biomass (trees and understorey), aboveground dead biomass (necromass), belowground living biomass (tree roots), and soil carbon. Datas for carbon stock estimation were collected from 40x10 m2 plots based on methodology from Hairiah and Rahayu (2007). The Similarity Index shows that the four sites are different communities except for Sites 1 and 4 which have 80% in common. The INP shows show mangrove communities in Site 1, 2, 3, and 4 are Aegiceras-Rhizophora, Aegiceras-Bruguiera, Xylocarpus-Bruguiera, and Aegiceras-Rhizophora, respectively. The Diversity Index of Site 1, 2, 3, and 4 are 0.66; 1.51; 1.68; and 0.37, while the Dominance are 0.53; 0.32; 0.22; and 0.83. Estimated total carbon stocks of Sites 1, 2, 3, and 4 are 401.52; 302,31; 369.52; and 348.79 MgC/ha respectively. The comparison of each carbon components indicate that the carbon stock values in trees, soil, necromass, understorey, and tree roots do not differ significantly between the four sites (P> 0.05). The largest proportion of carbon stock is found in soil component (91.7- 96.6%), followed by trees and understorey (1.5-4.5%), tree roots (1.2-3.6%), and necromass (0.2 -0.6%). In general, carbon stock estimation in the four sites are within the range of values reported for mangrove forests in Indonesia. text |
