Summary: | The fast forward advancement of media and information has reached at the point where
development cannot be predicted anymore. Today, people can access information from anywhere
and anytime. This condition threatens the existence of libraries, the place that used to be the main
place where people access media and information is now being questioned again by its relevance.
The library in its history turned out to have undergone a change of function and purpose. Jan
Assmann in Building for Book (2001) describes how the library typology has a tendency to be
changed by its community in accordance with the culture and control of the community itself. There
is a time when the development of library typology seems to stop because the progress of
information access makes this typology seem as if it is no longer needed by the public. The
community paradigm of libraries in Indonesia that is identical to archiving makes the interest of the
public to visit the library decreases.
On the other hand, developing information technology that is developing very rapidly raises a
problem where there is no control and lack of ethics to the information conveyed. The library raises
expectations where the place becomes a source of knowledge and media collected and selected well,
anticipating disruption of information that is not desired by the community. Technology should not
be a threat, but as a new alternative to designing a library that fits the context of the times. The
Yogyakarta City Archives and Library Office, which holds responsibility for library progression in 'kota
pelajar', is considered capable and has the potential to give the community a new paradigm of what
is called a modern library. The concept of a library that adjusts information and literacy needs in
accordance with the context of the era as well as a space for social and cultural activities for the
people. |
